Custom configurator vs ShapeDiver, Threekit and Zakeke.

Six criteria a manufacturer weighs before choosing: cost model, flexibility, complex rules, ERP and e-commerce integration, code ownership and time to launch. Every vendor cell is sourced from that vendor's own site.

A SaaS configurator can be the faster start when your catalog fits its model: Zakeke connects to your store, ShapeDiver runs a Grasshopper model you already have, and Threekit is a platform quoted per project. A custom build is worth it when your rules, your pricing and the link to production or your ERP are the product, and you want that logic in code you own.

Custom build (SBFS) compared with ShapeDiver, Threekit and Zakeke
CriterionCustom build (SBFS)ShapeDiverThreekitZakeke
Cost modelA one-time setup in four published ranges, from $2,500, plus a monthly fee by tier.Subscription billed monthly or annually, in published plans plus a custom Enterprise plan. The Shopify and WooCommerce plugins are a paid add-on.[1]Custom quote with no public price list. Threekit says pricing "varies based on your specific use case".[5]Monthly subscription in published plans, plus a percentage fee per custom product sale on every plan except Enterprise. 14-day free trial.[8]
FlexibilityShaped to your product and operations at every tier: the interface, the rules and the outputs are built for your catalog.Whatever your Grasshopper definition can compute, with over 40 supported Grasshopper plugins. The interface comes from its App Builder, or from your own app through its APIs and SDKs.[2][3]A headless platform: 3D configuration, photorealistic 2D images and AR from one product setup, plugged into your channels.[5]You set customization areas, options and rules in Zakeke and publish them to your store. It also covers 2D product customization and AR.[9][8]
Complex rulesRules are modeled from your catalog, so combinations your plant cannot build can be made impossible to order. That is how Muebles Torga cut customer-service tickets by 72%.Rules and geometry live in your Grasshopper definition, which ShapeDiver runs on its servers.[2][4]Compatibility checks and pricing from your price books, applied as each choice is made.[6][7]Conditional rules and pricing rules for configurations, on the higher plans.[8][10]
ERP and e-commerce integrationBuilt to the stack you run: integration with your e-commerce or ERP usually lands in the Mid or Parametric tier.Shopify and WooCommerce plugins, plus backend and platform APIs on the Business plan and up. No ERP connector is listed; the backend API triggers computations and exports.[1][3]Names Salesforce, SAP, Oracle ERP Cloud, Infor, Epicor and HubSpot, and a headless architecture for e-commerce, OMS, ERP, PIM and DAM.[6][5]Plugins for Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, Wix and other stores, an API and webhooks, and Akeneo and Bluestone PIM. No ERP connector is listed.[9][10]
Code ownershipYou own the source code and the data, with no license or per-seat fee. The repository can live in your GitHub or GitLab.You author the Grasshopper definition. It runs on ShapeDiver’s hosted platform under your subscription and stays on its servers.[4][1]Varies, check with the vendor.Varies, check with the vendor.
Time to launchThe full channel typically ships in six weeks. A configurator integrated into your existing stack is usually shorter; Diagnose sets the date.Fast when the Grasshopper model already exists: ShapeDiver says its store plugins get you selling "in minutes".[2]Threekit says "live in months, not years", with the timeline set by scope and scale.[6][5]Zakeke says a store connects "in just a few seconds" and 3D goes live "in weeks".[9][10]
02— Honest answer

When you should NOT hire us

For some catalogs a subscription configurator is the better purchase, and we would rather say so before you pay for a build.

Your catalog fits the templates

A fixed set of products with light options can go live faster on a SaaS configurator such as Zakeke, which says 3D goes live "in weeks".

You need a Shopify app this month

Zakeke and ShapeDiver both offer store plugins. A custom build starts with about a week of Diagnose and the full channel typically ships in six weeks.

Your budget is below our Entry tier

Our setup starts at $2,500. If that is more than the project can carry, a subscription is the honest answer.

Your model lives in Grasshopper and your team can build around it

ShapeDiver with your own developers may be all you need. We build products on ShapeDiver too, for when the accounts, pricing, checkout and exports around the viewer are the work.

03— Custom

When a custom build pays off

When the rules, the pricing and the link to production are what you sell.

Your options are rules, not a list

If what can be built depends on what else was chosen, a dropdown-driven tool runs out before your catalog does.

Pricing depends on who is asking

Retail, trade and dealer tiers, volume and regional pricing. A custom build models that logic and you own it.

Quoting is the bottleneck

Door Builder went from about 2.5 weeks per quote to 4 minutes once buyers could configure and price on their own.

04— FAQ

Build or buy, answered.

Straight answers. If the question is not below, write us. Every reply comes from the founder.

It depends on where the complexity lives. If it is parametric geometry and you already have a Grasshopper model, ShapeDiver itself is often the right base, and we build products on it too. If it is rules, pricing tiers and the link to production or your ERP, a custom build puts that logic in code you own. Threekit is a platform option that lists ERP and CRM integrations and quotes each project.

Up front, yes. A custom build at SBFS is a one-time setup from $2,500 plus a monthly fee by tier, and the code and the pricing logic are yours. ShapeDiver and Zakeke publish subscription plans, Zakeke also takes a percentage of each custom product sale on every plan except Enterprise, and Threekit quotes each project.

Yes. We build products on ShapeDiver. We are not a reseller and hold no certification or badge.

You do: the source code and the data, with no license or per-seat fee. It runs on Vercel and Neon in the region you choose, on your accounts or on ours while we operate it.

We tell you in Diagnose and refer you to teams that are better positioned. You pay nothing for that, because Diagnose is included.
