How to make seamless textures

A texture tiles when each edge continues into the opposite one. Five steps, and what this tool does with each.

  1. 01Start from an evenly lit photo

Shoot straight on, in soft light, with no strong shadow or hot spot: anything that changes across the frame repeats on every tile.

This tool: "Even out lighting" flattens a bright spot or a dark corner first.

  2. 02Match opposite edges

The left edge has to continue into the right, and the top into the bottom. The classic way is to offset the image by half and paint over the cross that appears.

This tool: overlaps the edges and cuts along the path where they differ least, so there is nothing to paint.

  3. 03Blend without blurring

A plain crossfade leaves a soft, ghosted band. Blending broad color shifts over a wide band and fine grain over a narrow one keeps the texture sharp.

This tool: blends each level of detail across the cut at its own width.

  4. 04Check it tiled

Repeat the texture 3 × 3 and look along the tile edges, and for a single feature that repeats too obviously.

This tool: shows the result tiled 3 × 3, with the seam measured and a toggle back to the original.

  5. 05Make the other maps from it

A realistic material also needs normal, roughness and ambient occlusion maps, made from the same seamless texture so they tile with it.

This tool: one button carries the result into the free PBR map generator.

02— Under the hood

How it works

Four steps, all of them on your device.

  1. 01Read

The image is decoded in a Web Worker on your device. Over 4096 px on the long side, it is scaled down first.

  2. 02Line up the edges

For each direction, a gradual mismatch between opposite edges, such as one side darker than the other, is tilted out. Then the two edge strips are laid over each other.

  3. 03Cut and blend

A least-difference path through the overlap decides where one side ends and the other begins. Each level of detail is blended across that path: color over a wide band, grain over a narrow one.

  4. 04Measure and resize

The result is resized back to your image's dimensions with wrap-around sampling, so the edges stay matched, and its wrap edge is measured against the texture's own pixel-to-pixel contrast.

Next, turn the seamless texture into a full material with the free PBR map generator: normal, height, roughness, metalness and AO maps that tile with it.

03— FAQ

Questions about the seamless texture generator.

What it does to your image, and what no seam removal can do.

No. The tool runs in your browser, in a Web Worker on your own device. The image is never sent to SBFS or anyone else; closing the tab discards it. Generate PBR maps passes it to the next tool inside your browser, and Share result sends only a link to this page.

"Original edge" compares the jump across the photo's wrap edge (right edge to left, bottom to top) with the average step between neighbouring pixels inside it; an ordinary photo is usually 2× to 5×. "Seam" takes the sharpest line along the tile's wrap edge and the band where the cut joined the two edges, and compares it with the sharpest line inside the photo itself: a line or a doubled pattern left by the cut counts, while a switch in grain, or a line the band copied from the photo, like mortar, doesn't. Both report the worse of the two directions. At a seam of 1.3× or under the result says "Tiles seamlessly"; above it, "Seams reduced".

The tool removes the seam, not the repetition. A distinctive feature, such as a knot in wood or one bright stone, still appears once per tile. Crop around it before you start, or use a larger photo so it repeats less often on the model.

Roughly uniform surfaces: stone, concrete, sand, soil, grass, bark, fabric, plaster, rust. Images with straight lines or a grid, such as bricks, tiles and planks, can show a kink where a line crosses the cut, because the tool matches pixels, not the pattern's layout.

The same as your image, up to 4096 px on the long side; a larger image is scaled down first. The overlap is cut out and the result is resized back to your image's dimensions, which softens it very slightly.

PNG keeps every pixel exactly; JPG is a fraction of the size with light compression. For a texture you will edit or make maps from, download the PNG.

PNG, JPG and WebP. Browsers cannot read TIFF, TGA, EXR or PSD files, so export a PNG from your editor first.

Yes. No sign-up, no email, no watermark and no limit on how many images you run. The only limits are 50 MB and 4096 px per image, set by how much memory a browser tab can use.
