Custom configurator or SaaS configurator?

A subscription configurator is faster to start and fine for a catalog of fixed products. The question is whether your rules, your pricing and your portal are the product.

SBFS builds custom configurators, and will still tell you when a subscription one is the right call. A SaaS configurator starts faster and is fine for a fixed catalog with light options. Custom wins when the rules are the product: Muebles Torga needed compatibility rules a template tool cannot express, and AV Drop needed the configurator to be the product itself, with Stripe subscriptions, usage credits and per-organisation inventory around it.

02— Fit

Who this is for

Your options are rules, not a list

If what can be built depends on what else was chosen, a dropdown-driven tool runs out before your catalog does.

Pricing depends on who is asking

Retail, trade and dealer tiers, volume and regional pricing. Per-seat tools rarely model that logic, and never let you own it.

The tool is the business

If your customers subscribe to the configurator itself, you cannot rent the thing you are selling.

03— Capabilities

What we build

Where a SaaS configurator is the right answer

A fixed catalog with light options, a small budget and a short runway. If that is the whole job, we say so during scoping and refer you to teams that are better positioned.

Where rules break a template tool

Muebles Torga needed parts that do not physically fit to be impossible to combine. Making impossible orders impossible to place cut customer-service tickets by 72%.

Where the widget stops

A configurator SaaS renders the product and stops there: no checkout, no dealer portal, no link to production, and per-seat fees for logic that lives in someone else's system.

Where the configurator is the product

AV Drop sells the design tool itself: Stripe subscriptions, usage credits, saved designs, reusable templates and per-organisation inventory. That business cannot be rented from a vendor.

−72%
Customer-service tickets

Torga's modular systems are powerful and confusing — customers ordered parts that didn't fit. SBFS added visual compatibility rules in the configurator plus a B2B dealer portal with scoped manager impersonation, and customer-service tickets fell 72%.

05— Method

How an engagement runs

01

Week 1 · Scope and catalog audit

We model your catalog and the rules behind it, then write the spec. That week is also where we tell you if a custom build is not what you need.

02

Weeks 2 to 6 · Build to MVP

Configurator, pricing rules, checkout or billing, portal and admin ship in parallel, with a reviewable demo every Friday in your own staging environment.

03

Week 6 · Production handoff

Deployed to your domain on your Vercel team and your Neon database. Your team is trained on the system, and we stay on retainer for tuning, not maintenance.

Design → client-ready spec

AV Drop's clients design custom audio-visual backdrops and stages. SBFS built a parametric 3D configurator with a subscription portal — design in the browser, then export a client-ready PDF spec or an AI render of the design in a real room, no CAD required.
